I'm a lesbian and I've been out to my friends for two years. I want to come out to my parents but I'm terrified that they wont accept my lifestyle. I'm twenty something and I no longer live under their roof however their opinion still matters to me. I'm tired of being someone Im not in front of them. How can I show them the real me??

Dear Tired of being Phony
Coming out to your family is such a tricky thing because you never know how they'll take the news. I know their opinions matter but they're living their lives the way they choose and so should you. Telling them will not only life the weight off your shoulders but it'll also give them the chance to know the real you. I remember one year I went to Pride in Baltimore and came back home with a pin. It had a rainbow figure with words around it obviously it wasn't something a straight person wouldn't be wearing (I was going thru a faze). I thought I took it off in my room but I couldn't find it anywhere so I finally shrugged it off. A few hours later I went to get something from the fridge and found the pin posted in the center of the fridge as if that's where it belonged. The point is we never really know how someone is going to react until we tell them. In the event they don't agree, just give them time to come around you cant stop living your life just because someone doesn't agree.
